As 2JANE and the rest of the planet approach the final shopping days of the 2009 Holiday season, I’m reminded what it means to play Santa’s Little Helper. Every year we work to ensure that whatever is ordered, whatever is requested, whatever is hoped for makes its way to the right recipient at the appointed Holiday celebration in homes and offices across the country. We don’t quite hop down chimneys, but on some of our busiest days I think I’d rather take on the travel and the soot myself rather than ask the warehouse to send just ONE more package!

A perennial favorite are these frames designed by Anna Rabinowicz for Rablabs.

The clever animal rings by London-based Soop Design, are the latest beloved character products following in the footsteps of the retired Mr. & Mrs. Jones Juicers.

But it’s all in good fun and we love what we do… This season, we were lucky to have a run on our gorgeous Champagne glasses thanks to unbelievably flattering editorial in Southwest’s Spirit Magazine. But, sadly, we felt like very unprepared elves when inventory ran low a good 2 weeks prior to Christmas!

Past years’ magazine coverage have given us equally memorable Holiday moments… Several years ago the New York Times featured a generous write up on a hand-made table that folds up and hangs on the wall when not in use. Well, as fascinating as this product is, it didn’t actually exist except for 1 sample. Needless to say the talented artist, a New Zealander based in London, was wood-working his fingers to the bone preparing tables as ‘must-have’ gifts in the lead-up to the Holidays. I don’t actually think a single table made it in time for anyone’s gift-giving, but we sure tried and all of our customers appreciated the effort!…

And then there was the year that Met Home featured our Mr. & Mrs. Jones juicers. Our erstwhile bestseller was an adorable pair of hand-made white ceramic forms whose hard little heads worked to juice fruits. Well, the precious items caught the eye of many more buyers than we were prepared for and up until 2-days before Christmas we were accepting large crates of the Jones from the artist, yet another London-based designer. This was before we had the good graces of warehouse storage,  and I’ll never forget putting on personal Holiday commitments aside and sitting on the stoop of my business partner’s home (enjoying the glorious weather that comes with December in Florida) unpacking the crates and repacking the happy pairs for their expedited journeys to trees and stockings around the country!

So, as this season comes to a close I do hope you’ve all received your requested packages and will be happy getting and giving all the gifts that will be opened by week’s end… Just don’t forget, presents are a year-round occurrence so when the first January birthday, wedding, or other bow & box-bringing occasion pops up 2JANE will be here to help brighten the day!

2JANE sends condolences to Metropolitan Home Magazine, her editors, writers, and publishers at Hachette Filipacchi Media, now down to 7 major US titles. The announcement (and personal emails from editors) came a few weeks ago saying December 2009 is Met Home’s final issue.

In February of 2007 Met Home featured Innermost's Delight light shade.

Later that year, Met Home featured Emma Jeffs' Window Film in July.

I’m sorry I’ve been late in giving her her due good bye, but I’m surprised and saddened and haven’t been sure of what to write. It’s a passing that deserves some true reflection… The multiple, unfortunate publication closings that have become a hallmark of this recession, have simply got to come to an end soon. (The recent closing of Gourmet was no less tragic.) Two years ago marked the beginning of the end with the closing of the standard setting House & Garden.

As a former editor (Home Magazine: Deceased; This Old House & Departures: Still Kicking!) I feel I’m watching my industry slip away. I fear that Ugly Betty’s paean to the sexy world of progressive fashion/lifestyle editorial  is about to hit fairy tale/urban myth status. Vogue, Harper’s, Elle, House Beautiful, Elle Decor (Hachette’s remaining design and interiors magazine) and all other venerable titles I’m pulling for you. We need reminders of ‘the good life’ and possibility and, well, hope that dream homes and lives are achievable. Glossy road signs that we can be slightly better than we are today should be celebrated.

As for Met Home, I’m not at all shy to say that Met Home was 2JANE’s very favorite title. They were kind in their coverage of our products and the editors we worked closely with were always the friendliest of faces at various industry events. One of 2JANE’s first big sales boosts came in December 2005, when Met Home featured our erstwhile signature product: Mr. & Mrs. Jones juicers. The Jones placement was exciting and bore us many new 2JANE fans. I will always be grateful for that significant shout out!

But aside from the professional connection, I was also a fan and subscriber. I loved the book, whether or not 2JANE was part of the editorial. Each month it featured cool aspirational properties that were smart, livable, and wholly appealing to contemporary tastes. As for the annual Top 100 list—I have no idea what will take it’s place as a gauge for the hottest products & concepts coming down the design pipeline. Not to mention its long life and rich history dating back to the ’70s (click here for a fantastic article from ReadyMade Magazine’s blog) made it one of the most important shelter titles of the modern era. Thank you to Metropolitan Home for the many moments of sublime home worship. Yet another cornerstone of my sanctuary’s foundation crumbles…
